Bhutan, being a Buddhist nation has many festivals that take place throughout the year in different regions of the country. The more popular ones are the Tshechu, which literally means the tenth dayTsechus are festivals commemorating the deeds and accomplishments of  the great  Buddhist saint, Guru Padmasambhava, more commonly known as Guru Rinpoche in Bhutan. It is believed that Guru Rimpoche was born on the tenth day of the lunar calendar and all his great deeds were also accomplished on the tenth day hence we have the different festivals in Bhutan that take place on the tenth day of the lunar calendar throughout the year. Various mask dances, songs and dances are performed along with religious rituals during the festivals.

The most popular of these festivals are the Paro Tsechu, Thimphu Tsechu, and the Ura Yakchoe.

Thimphu Tshechu Festival (7 Days)

Thimphu Tshechu held in honour of Bhutan’s patron saint, Guru Padmasambhava, popularly known as Guru Rimpoche, is held from 9th to 11th of the 8th month in the Bhutanese calendar. It is held on the courtyard of the Tashichhodzong and is considered one of the most beautiful Tshechus in western Bhutan. The 2019 Thimphu Tshechu is scheduled to be held from 08th – 10th of October 2019

Day 01: Arrival in Paro. Drive on to Thimphu 
Day 02: Thimphu 
Day 03: Day excursion to Punakha valley 
Day 04: Thimphu. Full day at the Festival 
Day 05: Thimphu to Paro 
Day 06: Paro

Paro Tshechu Festival (7 Days)

The Paro Tshechu is an annual event held every spring and is by far the most popular pageantry in Bhutan with the unfurling of the world’s biggest Thangka or Thongdrel. During the festival, mask dances to commemorate the deeds of the great saint Guru Rinpoche are performed. The dances invoke the deities of the tantric teachings – who through their powers and blessings remove misfortunes by suppressing all evil spirits.

Day 4: Drive to Paro for sights 
Day 5: Full day at the Paro Festival
